<>Ever since the first Metal Gear released on MSX in Japan, Hideo Kojima has been changing the gaming industry with this brain-child of his. His idea of a stealth game has become so popular that numerous games have tried to emulate his style (and usually fail). What makes Metal Gear games different from other stealth games is the unusual gameplay and story ideas Hideo Kojima places in them. Only in Metal Gear series will you find a lunatic mad bomber on skates or a mind numbing story filled with twists and turns that is not clichéd or already been attempted before. The new gameplay mechanics are usually unique ideas that set trends in gaming world. Just as in the past Hideo Kojima has once again created an amazing work of art that will again change the gaming world.

Metal Gear games always consisted of a lone operative that is send to an enemy territory to clear certain set of objectives as stealthy as possible. But what made each sequel different was the unique and sometimes downright wacky gameplay mechanics and story implemented in them. But all these past games focused heavily only on the stealth aspect in gameplay and story. This new element of stealth made its way into many games and some even arguably bested MGS2 when it comes to realistic stealth gameplay and story.

But MGS3 is not just an average Metal Gear sequel set in jungle with few new moves. MGS3 overall evolved from MGS2 gameplay to include a new element: survival. While this new element is not as pre-dominant as stealth was in the past games, survival is the focusing aspect of the gameplay and the story along with stealth.

Similar to the other Metal Gear games, MGS3 also starts off with the insertion of a lone operative into enemies’ territory with strict mission guidelines. But the similarities end there. Instead of making the players infiltrate another base in a post-modern setting, Hideo Kojima decided to create a prequel that is set in a jungle. Metal Gear solid 3 takes place in 1964, a time when tensions between USSR and USA was at peak. As mentioned before, the setting for this mission is a frictional jungle named Tselinoyarsk inside Soviet territory. In the past the players were restricted to sneak around man made structures and only had to worry about occasional re-stocking and get around guards.

But Metal Gear Solid 3’s introduction of survival element now drops the players in middle of a jungle with very few support tools and new level of realistic gameplay. Unlike before, the players are now required to make sure snake is properly feed so he can preserve his stamina. On top of that, major injuries can damage the maximum capacity of snake’s health bar. To fix it, players are to “cure” snake using different surgical equipment, medicines and procedures. Also to keep snake properly feed, players are to hunt for food and carry it with them. This new level of survival adds to the stealth gameplay that has already been established in MGS2.

In the past the players only had to worry about human enemies, but now players have to survive from humans as well as deadly animals. Not only that, but the whole setting for the game is a hazard that players have to survive. Players have to navigate though the jungle while avoiding natural traps like swamps that can drown snake, as well as man made traps like trip wire explosives to snares. The players also have to be careful of what they eat or they might end up eating something poisonous.

But the game did not loose the stealth gameplay that made the past Metal Gear games famous. The game is a seamless blend of survival in jungle as well as stealthy navigation though it. The players are still expected to sneak by the patrolling guards without causing any commotion or killing anyone. But MGS3 unlike the “other” stealth games does not severally penalize the players for not sneaking perfectly. Compared to past Metal Gear games, in MGS3 players can easily shoot there way though most of the enemies they might face if they do get caught.

The survival element exists not only in the gameplay, but also plays a very strong part in the story. The story twists and development always throws the players in situations they have to “survive” through to progress in either gameplay or story wise. From the events were boss breaks snake’s hand to surprise attack by Ocelot unit, the story always furthers the survival element by throwing players in tight situations where they have to utilize what they have and what they can salvage to survive.

<>One of the major complaints casual gamers had about MGS2 was the lack of gameplay the game provided in proportion to the amount of cutscenes and codec calls in the game. Hideo Kojima proved that he listened to fans, by drastically cutting down on the cutscenes and radio calls while increasing the gameplay. If the game is properly (i.e. sneaking, not run and gun tactics) played, it will provide about 5-6 hours extra gameplay over the amount of gameplay provided in MGS2. Not only that, but MGS3 contains so many new features and peculiar gimmicks only a talented game developer like Hideo Kojima can manage to successfully add into the game without cluttering it.
<>
<>One of the most obvious new gameplay features is snake\&#39s ability to change camouflage uniform and apply face paint to blend into the surrounding he is in. The top right hand of the screen has something called a “camo index” which shows in percentage value of how well Snake is blended into that certain area. As snake moves around the percentage value changes in real time to illustrate how well he is hidden. At 100% snake is virtually invisible to the guards unless he bumps into them or attracts attention to himself by making too much noise. But the right camouflage uniform also requires the right face paint. With only the camouflage uniform snake will only reach the maximum of 95%. He will require the proper face paint to get the final 5% to make him 100% camouflaged. This feature itself is very novel idea, but Hideo Kojima takes it further by including many special camouflage uniforms and face paints. Few added just for visual enjoyment of the players, while others provide special powers. Hideo Kojima used the face paint feature to add many comical face paints like Geisha, death and frog. As for the camo uniforms there are numerous humorous uniforms that exist solely for laughs. But beside that there are quite a lot of special uniforms that give special skills to snake like bigger O2 gauge, repelling fire, and reduce stamina consumption by half. Not only that, but players can receive Boss camouflages either though certain automatic events or killing them though using only knockout darts. Certain Boss camouflages are required for story progression (like Sorrow\&#39s sprit camo) while others are optional yet highly valuable (like Fear\&#39s camo which allows you to be “invisible”, but reduces your stamina bar in fast constant rate). Also make sure to check Ivan\&#39s locker on your second visit to Groznyj Grad to receive the black version of the suit Boss wears in the game and we see Snake wearing in the trailers. It provides some special abilities that will come very handy in the future boss fights.
<>While camouflages are mainly for outdoor environment, they can also be used indoor inside the occasional ammo/food bases and bunkers present in first half on the game. But as you progress further into the story, you are required to sneak into a massive lab ( Graniny Gorki). But to get inside you have to wear a scientist disguise to fool the guards.
<>These disguises replace the camouflages inside the bases. This is where MGS3 indoor sneaking differs from MGS2. Instead of relying on radar and sneaking abilities, you can use disguises to get though certain parts of the base. But unfortunately the people you are trying to masquerade as can tell that you are in disguise and raise the alarm. So it is impossible to fool scientists while using scientist disguise. Later on in the game you have to sneak into the main base (Groznyj Grad) and require a certain high ranking officer\&#39s uniform to successfully get inside. To complete the disguise you have to wear a mask that will make you look just like him. This man you are masquerading as looks eerily similar to a certain protagonist from a past Metal Gear game. There are quite a few other disguises in the game including a mechanic disguise you have to use to get inside the hanger of Shagohod.
<>
<>The actual indoor setting in MGS3 is just as impressive as the outdoor setting in MGS3 is. Unlike MGS2, the indoor areas look different from place to place and don\&#39t have any futuristic “metallic” walls like MGS2 had. The massive main base (Groznyj Grad) has to be one of the most amazing settings of all Metal Gear games. The whole base contains numerous floors with different levels, furniture and “realistic” feel to the whole place. The base overall consists of many connecting buildings, floors and areas. It has a lower level prison area, massive “parking lots” with military cars, armored trucks and tanks. Not only that but the base consists of numerous bunkers where you can actually see guards resting. The place also consists of a weapons testing/lab area and the hangar that is holding Shagohod. While you don\&#39t come to this base until last part of the game, there are other small and mid-sized bases earlier in the game. The first half of the game consists of small bases/bunkers than usually just contain some food and ammo. There is also a mid size base earlier and you also get to infiltrate the research lab ( Graniny Gorki).
<>While the indoor sections are huge and amazing, the massive jungle areas are just breathtaking. But unfortunately there is not much side/alternate paths in the jungle. The progression from screen to screen is very linearly with no optional side areas which you can wander off to. But nevertheless the huge jungle areas that come up occasionally more than make up for the lack of alternate paths. No area to area every looks the same or seems like a carbon copy design with some changes. Each area actually feels like a new segment of a large jungle you are sneaking though. But there is no Grand theft auto style jungle freedom like some people have imagined. But once people realize that is not how MGS3 is, they will be more than shocked at some of the beautifully rendered areas.
<>Not only that but the whole environment is very interactive. There are hornet\&#39s nests you can shoot down, rolling barrels that will explode on impact, and fallen logs you can hide in. There are also many varieties of traps like foot snares that if you step in lift Snake up into a tree. But these don\&#39t do any damage, unless enemies nearby see you. All you have to do is press triangle to cut your foot loose. Some trip wires cause explosives to go off, and some cause spiked logs to swing down from the trees above. And then are pitfalls where you die instantly. To make sneaking even more hard there are cans filled with rocks stung up in the trees and attached to wires on the ground. If you trip on of those wires, the cans will make quite a lot of commotion, attracting all the guards and dogs nearby. But fortunately you can see all these traps easily by wearing thermal goggles and can avoid them.
<>

Another thing that is commendable about this game is how stamina and eating/hunting is added into the gameplay. Players basically have to get stamina by either hunting for animals or searching for food. The players can also steal ration like food from the bases in the jungle. This stamina bar dictates how well snake can aim, stalk and even how well he can see. Not only that but snake can suffer major injuries like broken bones, cuts, gunshot wounds and illnesses. These major injuries reduce snake\&#39s maximum health capacity if the injury is not treated. To treat snake, players have to utilize the CURE option in there survival viewer. Here players have to use the right tools and medicine to cure the specific injury. Certain injuries require medicine and injections that are items you have to collect. Most of the medicine needed for the Cure option can be found in the bases. But for some illnesses, players would be required to find a certain plant or mushroom to make a medicine out of it. Off course curing snake is only optional. Players may choose to let snake naturally heal over time. This off course reduces the stamina bar pretty fast.

But if you save your game and turn off the console, the injuries cure themselves eventually in real-time if you don\&#39t play the game for long enough. But if you don\&#39t play the game for 2 or more days, most of the food in your inventory gets spoiled. This spoiled food will make snake sick if he eats it. Also another interesting aspect of the game is that the animals at night time are different from what you can hunt during day time. At night you can find king cobras, owls, Flying Squirrels, bats and many other nocturnal animals. But unfortunately Spotting guards and animals is very hard without the aid of one of the gadgets snake carries.

As I mentioned earlier MGS3 has many little gimmicks that make it different from so many other stealth games that tried to copy and fail. One of very interesting trick in the game how real world time affects the events in the game. Depending on where you save and how long you wait before your next play, you can unlock many extra cutscenes, mini games and extras. Make sure to create a save prior to the prison scene at Groziny Grad and load back from it to play a very special segment. Also enemies can be interrogated to learn all kinds of new information like the location of weapons, guards ahead and even secret radio frequencies. Some of these frequencies contain music from 1960\&#39s era, while other frequencies have cryptic messages. Also guards at certain areas only have limited amount of ammunition, so in they run out of ammo they either run off or try to stab you with a knife.

Another very important option in the survival viewer is the map. Due to the lack of a solid radar in the game, players have to often refer to this map to make sure they are going to the right area and check for any guard/item location on it. After receiving any intelligence on anything from either a guard or a support team via radio, it gets marked on this map. Players also have to often use this map in few boss fights.

Another smart difference in MGS3 from past MGS games is the inclusion of numerous weapons and spy gadgets that are not only useful but trendy. Players get a massive choice of weapons to acquire and carry. Some of the most memorable and unique weapons/items are: Torch, Fork, M63 MG, Scorpion SMG, fake death pills, TNT, Mousetraps and RPG-7. Not only that but players can do gun tricks with the Colt Single Action Army revolver just like ocelot at certain points in the game. You use the Fake Death Pill to pretend you\&#39re dead in the prison cell after the “event.” After seeing you “die” Johnny opens your door at which time you can use Revive pill to get back up and knock Johnny out. You can use the Fake Death Pills any time you like, as long as you use a Revive Pill within 30 seconds, or Snake dies for real. Also if players choose to start the game on very easy, they acquire a gun called “Easygun” which looks lot like the gun from Snake vs. monkey mini games, only it\&#39s an electric taser here.

There is also massive variety in kinds of guards and enemies in the game. There is regular patrol guards, guards that come in teams of four, guards that have dogs along with them. More different guards in the mountains with flamethrowers, guards than rappel down for the Hinds and also guards on the flying platforms. This is just listing the guards in the out doors and not including the different and special units found in different areas. Each guard has there own specialty and pattern of behavior. Some guards in certain patrol areas have limited ammunition. While the patrol of four don\&#39t appear to have limited ammunition and also fight offensively unlike the other lone patrol guards that retreat to get closer to other guards. Also the flamethrower guards can easily be defeated by just shooting there backpack, which makes them explode and set them on fire. This variety of weapons and tactics used by each different set of guards is what makes this game so interesting and have lasting appeal.

Like every other gem, MGS3 is not without faults. One of the biggest problems in the game is the inflexible camera. The little control given to players over the camera is quite useless when it comes to properly sneaking around in the jungle. It is very hard to note the enemies movement and there location. Not only that, but at times when you don\&#39t have at least 90% camo, it would be good to have a responsive camera that can be used to see what is around the area so you can plan on how you can get from point A to point B. But unfortunately this camera problem usually gets the player caught while they are in middle of sneaking and forces them to use violent methods to get away from the alert team. My other minor complain is the lack of putting all these new gameplay elements to proper use. Just like MGS2, there are numerous items and moves that are barely used in the game, because the players are given not many chances to utilize them.

Overall the game should be about 16-20 hours for a Metal Gear veteran if he takes time to truly enjoy the game and sit though all the cutscenes and make some optional radio calls. The gameplay of this game is quite original and does not have many similar tasks that give you a déjà vu like MGS and MGS2 did. There are quite a lot of unique events and tasks in the game that makes MGS3 a total new experience and provides as much surprise in gameplay as there is in the story. This is easily the best Metal Gear game from gameplay standpoint.

On the side note, the mini game: snake vs. monkey actually unlocks quite a few surprising things in the main game.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Here is some interesting details on 3 separate boss fights that are my favorites.

The End

End is a 100 year old sniper who stalks around the huge jungle area to set up in a sniping position to wait for you to come in range and shoot at you with his tranquilizer darts. This darts cause some health damage, but players are to quickly go into cure option to use the knife to remove the dart. If you do not do that, slowly the screen starts to fade black from the outside until snake gets knocked out. The whole post of the battle is for snake to spot End at his sniper points. Once you do that, the area gets automatically marked onto the map.

The End: His sniper points are marked on the in-game map as Snake spots them. The battle takes place over three massive areas. You can use your scope or SVD to look around to spot sun glare off his scope, so you can shoot him. Once you shoot him few times he will start moving to next sniping point of his choice. If you spot him in all points, he tends to return to the same spot after a while. So you can use the map to get from one point to another and try to find it. You can either set down and wait for him to come and kill him with SVD or try your luck by actually going to the snipping points he choose, in hopes of catching him off guard. If you do get close to him while he is searching for you, you can kill him easily using the shotgun. He may try to throw a flash grenade and get away, but if you keep firing you will be able to kill him.

Note: you can find his parrot on top corner of the ammunition storehouse at the first area. Killing End\&#39s bird aggravates him to try kill you faster.

The Sorrow

This “battle” is actually a very nice event where you have to get to end of the river to touch sorrow\&#39s dead body while he brings up ghosts to try stop you from reaching there. Sorrow is already dead so you can not physically hurt him so you have to keep walking downriver, as the ghosts of all the enemies and bosses you\&#39ve killed appear. If they touch Snake, he loses small part of his life. You have the Colt SAA during this battle, and you can keep the ghosts from touching Snake by shooting them. As you get further downstream, more ghosts try to touch Snake rather than let him walk by. Sometimes the Sorrow emits a spirit wave that knocks snake back into the water. This doesn\&#39t do any damage unless he knocks down Snake in the middle of a large number of ghosts or when a boss\&#39s ghost is around. When you reach the end of the stream and touch The Sorrow\&#39s corpse, Snake dies instantly. However, you can still open the item window and use the Revive Pill.

Note: Make sure to keep a very good eye on the ghosts that appear. You will find some you will really like.

Shagohod

The premise of the battle begins after the bomb in the hanger goes off and 100s of guards are chasing you along with Shagohod. Guards on flying platforms, cars, and motorbikes are all hot on your trail. At this point you can equip any of your current weapons and get unlimited ammunition. I used M63 and RPG-7 to take down all these guards. It\&#39s amazing how they pulled off this sequence without any visible slowdowns. This has to be the most action packed amazing part from any metal gear game. After taking down most of the guards, you have to immobilize Shagohod by shooting its drills using RPG. The weak points are at back of the drills and you have to wait for EVA to drive around behind before you shoot it. After the Shagohod stops moving, Volgin jumps out and rips out cables out of Shagohod and attaches it to himself. At this point Volgin chases EVA around the runway, while you are on foot. You can use the stationary machine guns set around the area to shoot him until he focuses his attention on you and starts to shoot missiles and machine gun bullets at you. At this point you should leave that area and run around as he tries to chase you and run you over. At this point you can shoot Volgin on top when he passes you. After 7-8 shots to his head, the battle should end.

<>When it comes to graphics in Metal Gear Solid games they are always top notch for the time they are released in. Every Metal Gear by far have had only ingame cutscenes without any pre-rendered CG cutscenes. Same as MGS and MGS2, MGS3 also pushes the boundaries of the hardware with excellent graphics and cinematic atmosphere that very few video games can create. At first few hours of the game, the graphics are un-impressive, because of middling textures when the areas are not so huge. But as your progress though the game, the areas expand to provide huge variety in locations and textures. It is quite amazing how PS2 can pull of these amazing graphics for huge areas like these. It’s not just the texture of the environment that is amazing, but also the very realistic character models in game and the facial movement they have during cutscenes. The cutscenes have become bit more dramatic and action packed compared to MGS2 cutscenes. But there is never any slowdowns during any of the action filled cutscenes or huge gameplay areas.
<>
<>The loading from area to area is about the same amount as it was MGS2 room to room loading. This loading never gets longer or shorted depending on the areas that PS2 has to load. As for the radio and survival viewer opening slowdown, it does not exist. The radio screen opens without any problem or slowdowns. But during the intense gameplay moments when there is lot going on the screen, there is some minimal slowdowns. The usual slowdowns occur when an attack team is all on the screen and someone throws a grenade that lands in an area that with 3-4 animals. When the grenade explodes, there is some slowdown that lasts until the ration boxes from the animals are created. Other than that, most of the time the game works without any frame rate problems indoors or outdoors.
<>
<>The music composed for this game is the best music from the entire series. The use of guitar for most of the music is very well fitting along with light drums and overall jungle feel to the music. While the ingame music is “junglish,” the music during the cutscenes is quite like MGS2 cutscenes music, only with more use of guitars. The dramatic music during boss fights, to the stylish themes used during the cutscenes are all the best music I have ever heard in a metal gear game. I enjoyed every bit of music I heard in MGS3, expect for a certain bit of up tempo music that sounded suspiciously like Top Gun theme. Other than this one music bit that played in a certain cutscene, every other music in the game was amazing and emotion evoking.
<>
<>And finally one of the most important things in Metal Gear games and any other cinematic games: Voice acting. The voice acting in Metal Gear Solid 3 can be compared to the level of voice acting present in Metal Gear Solid 2. Most of the cast for MGS3 did an excellent job at VA for most of the game. But at parts of the cutscenes and in some key radio conversions, few voice actors did not have much emotion in lines they conveyed. They sounded bit too plain and read the lines like they were forced to read them. Overall the voice acting is good and of MGS2 levels, but at times the voice actor for The Boss sounded too soft for a woman who has been though so much. Metal Gear Solid has always had the best voice acting of the whole series in my opinion and I still think it’s the best. But MGS3 voice acting is not bad, it’s just not as good as the voice acting in MGS was.
<>

<>Words can not explain enough about how amazing Metal Gear Solid 3 is. The overall variety of gameplay and setting is absolutely stunning. Not to mention the perfect story that recreates the feeling many people felt playing Metal Gear Solid for first time. What made MGS such a memorable game was the atmosphere in the gameplay and the story’s ability to draw you in. I can without a doubt say MGS3 has a feel of stealth/survival though out the whole game. I often felt that I was actually in a jungle, all alone trying to survive from the guards and the nature. It brings back the spy feeling because of the very realistic recreation of the jungle and the very dense story told though the cutscenes that are quite frequent at first part of the game.
<>One of the greatest things about the whole game is, it feels like it was made just for the fans. There are lots and lots of subtle hints and lines that are placed just for the fans who played the previous MG games and loved them. There are quite a few events and major lines in the game that will make the hardcore fans go “HOLY S***”, while the casual gamers just absorb in the new pieces of information, because they don’t know the relevance of it. In the past some people complained about the amount of cutscenes and more importantly the length of codec calls present in MGS2. Hideo Kojima came to a compromise by reducing the required radio calls and increasing the gameplay. I personally felt the cutscenes were just as abundant as they were in MGS2. But the ratio of gameplay to cutscenes is different from MGS2, so it all works out for the best. The cutscenes this time are very action packed and very interesting. You will never see a cutscene in MGS3 where all it is about is 2 people standing there talking. All the cutscenes have something going on in them that makes them very interesting. For most part the cutscenes were at most during the start, middle and end of the game. In other parts it is usually just surviving in the jungle or in a base with only in contact with your support team though radio. Another cool feature in the cutscenes is the player’s ability to press R1 during some parts of the cutscenes to see the event though the eyes of snake. Note: Make sure to Press R1 during your talk to Granin in the Lab to see some very interesting things on his table.
<>
<>One of my minor complaints about MGS3 radio is the lack of “talking heads” past Metal gear games had. I know it’s not very important, but at times I felt it would have been good to have something to focus you attention on during the long radio calls. Unlike MGS2, you will not find overuse of radio to explain huge plot details or twists that would have been better if they were told in cutscenes. But this reduction of forcing huge radio calls has also reduced some complex details that in MGS2. But one of the things in MGS3 is much of the information is optional. If the players decide they want to know more about a certain event, character or place all they have to do is call one of the support team members to get a long detailed explanation about it. This is one of the merits in MGS3 that would have been very useful in MGS2. Some casual gamers don’t want a 20 min lecture on what type of missile launcher Shagohod has. But if they player does want to know, all they have to do is call Signit at right time in the game and he will give detailed explanation. So in many ways the story is as complex and detailed as the players want it to be. If you only stick to the required radio calls and cutscenes you would get barely get any details on each individual member of Cobra Unit. But if you decide to call team members about a certain boss, you would get detailed information about the person’s life and his background. Unlike past Metal Gear bosses, Cobra Unit members has short hellos and short goodbyes. In other words they don’t tell there whole life story just before there death. At time it does make them bit shallow, but it is the player’s choice to either get more information on them or to just continue with the game. Not only this but there is also lots and lots of extra conversation over the radio with each team member. I almost never has any repeated conversations with the members even if I just stay in one place and keep calling them back.
<>Another great thing about MGS3 is how well the story is presented to the players. The story is told in a very understanding manner that can be compared to MGS storytelling. Also there is a very big improvement on character development of people other than the main character. The relations and background of Ocelot, Boss and Volgin are very well portrayed in MGS3. Unlike MGS2, these 3 people get quite a lot of “screen-time” and development. Instead of making most of the game about twists, deception and only “good guys,” MGS3 has development of characters and story in a manner that is not confusing or boring. I can’t emphasis enough on how well such a complex story is explained in MGS3 without compromising any of the things we cherish (story complexity, details, depth, philosophical meaning, overall theme).
<>
<>As for the gameplay in MGS3, it is very unique and different from all the past Metal Gear games. In reality, when it comes to gameplay differences between MGS and MGS2, it’s just evolving over already set standards. MGS3 on other had added totally new elements of gameplay and changed the overall setting of the game from MGS2. Gameplay wise, the leap from MGS2 to MGS3 is bigger than the leap from MGS to MGS2. Many previews and even a review suggested that MGS3 controls are lot similar to MGS2 with some new options added. In general I have to disagree with them on that. Metal Gear solid 3 has a feel of “newness” that does not even feel like MGS2. Even when sneaking around the indoor segments of the games, I never felt it was like MGS2. While the “moving left analog stick to move and X to couch” is basically the same, the gameplay evolved from MGS2 controls. There are many new equipment and moves that are totally now. Players have to realize that this is not MGS2 and they need to try different tactics to get around the jungle. While basically the moves from MGS2 are all intact in MGS3, they are not meant to be the only thing that players have to relay on the get though the jungle safely.
<>Without using right equipment, camouflage and food, players will often find themselves in tight situations which they have to resort to violence to get out. It took me a while to get hang of the gameplay, but once I realize you can not just sneak around like in MGS2 I had no problem evading the guards and playing the game as it was meant to be played. But one of my disappointments about MGS3 gameplay is same as it was in MGS2. Quite a lot of new gameplay elements are not put to good use. Players are almost never given a chance to hang from a tree to shoot the guards or are there many chances to use the crocodile hat to scare the guards. But these are minor problems that the game makes up for with many hidden features. Metal Gear Solid 3 has the most replay value of any MGS game’s first release (not counting Substance, which is an add-on). There are many hidden items, weapons and camouflages throughout the whole game. Some camouflages give you special skills while others are just plain humorous. Not only that but MGS3 has quite a lots of hidden videos and mini games you can unlock by saving at right time and loading back certain time later. Hint: Save in middle of The End battle and load it back in 2-3 days to see a very special sequence. Not only are but there are goofy cartoonish frogs “Kerotin" scattered though out the game that players can collect to unlock many things in the game. This game has so many extras and hidden things than any other Metal Gear game before. MGS3 has very high replay value not just for the extras but also the amazing gameplay.
<>
<>As many people may be wondering if there are many big shockers and surprises waiting for them in MGS3 which Hideo mislead them about with the trailers. The answer is yes and no. Overall there is no huge twist/surprise like Raiden in MGS2, but there are numerous things Hideo Kojima mislead people about using the trailers. Overall the whole story is a amazing that out did every Metal Gear game in my opinion. Gameplay wise it perfect with so much variety and special missions/tasks that are not present in any other Metal Gear game. There is a good reason this review does not consist of a numerical review score. People tend to ignore all the points and explanations made though out the whole review but place too much emphasis on couple of numbers placed at end of the review. If this was an unbiased review from a general gamer, it deserves a 9.5 on a scale of 10. But I am not an unbiased reviewer, but a big fan of Metal Gear series that enjoyed MGS2 story, which most of the general media complains about. Hence it is unfair for me to give it a numeric score. I have given my reasons to why I think Metal Gear Solid 3 is the best Metal Gear game ever made. Use the whole review to make your judgment on the game or better yet buy the game and then decide if you agree with me or not. But one this is for certain, Sam and Gabe are no match for the legendary Naked Snake.

<>For many fans the real reason they look forward to a new Metal Gear game and want to play it is not for gameplay, but to enjoy the story. One of the main reasons why Metal Gear series will always be the top dog of the stealth games is because; of the heavy and detailed plot Hideo Kojima develops for these games. He does not just tell a story, but presents it in a manner, that you can only be astonished by. His stories always have a deeper meaning than what we don’t see at first until we sit down and think about it. People have analyzed the ending of Metal Gear Solid 2 in hundreds of different ways. Some expect him to fully answer all the questions because of the cliff hanger ending, while others don’t expect him to answer anything, but only provide us more background information and allow us to decide the outcome. But what everyone of his fans can agree on is, Hideo Kojima is a very skillful storywriter who puts lots of details to the plot of his games.

<>MGS3 story is no different; Hideo Kojima has once again outdone himself by creating a very fanciful story that is a flawless blend of reality and unrealistic elements that make a true Metal Gear game. With MGS and MGS2 story Hideo Kojima had freedom to choose how he wanted to make his stories and still make them realistic because they were set in post-modern “world of tomorrow.” He had the freedom to choose what the future will be because it has not been written yet. He made Arsenal-Gear crash into New York because he can and no one can question him about it because it’s set in the “future” he created. But when creating MGS3, Hideo Kojima had to follow guidelines set in the past because, MGS3 is a prequel. The future is already determined and laid out for him. But even with this Hideo Kojima created this tale of cold war espionage that is built on real world fact and history. Hideo Kojima altered many historic facts with this story, yet the sense of realism is never lost. Even when seeing the Fear jump from tree to tree did I not feel any loss of realism in MGS3, nor did I feel any lack of reality when The Pain was sending in ample amounts of bees after me. This game in every way feels real like Metal Gear Solid felt real even with a physic, a man who can copy others down to there blood and a undying twin. Metal Gear Solid 3 story is based off so much historic facts of that time, that you actually feel immersed into the 60s Spy vs. Spy era and feel true feelings for the characters that only original MGS made me feel.

<>But this Metal Gear game is quite different from all other Metal Gear games. Metal Gear Solid 2 always had a dйjа vu feel for people who played Metal Gear solid. But with MGS3, there is no feeling like that. This is a new story, set in a new era with totally new cast of characters. Big chunk of the story is a very elaborate tale of spies, backstabbing, double agents, Cold war tensions and fear of War. This game outdoes MGS and MGS2 because of this. Not because it has confusing plotline, or because it has a straightforward story, but because it draws the players into the story and make them feel for the characters. Overall story wise the whole game feels new and complex that is a different type of story than MGS or MGS2.

<>This game has it’s own share of plot twists and “Holy shit” moments. But that is not done by pulling a Raiden like twist or popping in Patriots. Most of the surprises presented in first ѕ of the game are similar to liquid/mater surprise in MGS. The surprises have lot to do with espionage and spies. In many ways MGS3 is actually deeper than MGS2. The only reason why MGS2 story was complex was huge plot holes, cliffhanger ending and too many twists. The players has to listen to 3 different people’s version of what S3 really was in last one hour of the game. Without the two fake explanations of what S3 is, that one hour could have been used to clearly explain what it really way. That was what caused the casual gamers not to understand what the real plot of MGS2 was. When it comes down to basics all MGS2 really was in introduction of a secret organization and there plans to test a program they will be used to manipulate general public.

<>MGS3 tells a different kind of story that is more complex than that. Only MGS3 does not have double twists or triple twists like MGS2 did. The way the plot is presented is pretty straightforward, but the actual plot is not straightforward. Most of the time in MGS2 was spend revolving about plot twists and lies. But MGS3 uses the extra time to develop other characters other than Snake. At some points in game we see cutscenes of snake watching Volgin, ocelot and Boss though binoculars. This adds more to the story and character depth of other characters other than Naked snake. MGS3 has very reduced radio calls compared to MGS2. But much of the details now became optional. The back story on the bosses is not forced onto you though a 30min before fight and after fight cut scene. If players choose to they can call there team to get more details the bosses and there background. MGS3 is a complex story built on historic facts that tells the tales of spies, cold war, espionage and manipulation in a clear manner
That can only be compared to MGS storytelling.

<>- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

<>Similar to past Metal Gear games, Metal Gear Solid 3 story is deeper and more complex than it first seems. A simple mission of leading a scientist back to America turns into a multi-national incident that no one expected or planned...not even the Patriots. Like every story, Metal Gear series has a beginning and birth of everything that is important to the story. Metal Gear Solid 3 is really about the birth of The Patriots and there funding.

<>Before World War 1 and World War 2, there existed a powerful group called The Philosophers. They were a group of world leaders who worked together to settle differences in secret meetings and conduct world affairs. They decided the fate of the mankind to an extent. But when their members began dying, the countries grew apart and world wars started. Due to the loss of there power the world is almost chaotic with all these wars and almost the start of a new world war.

<>At this point a new group named The Patriots are forming. They are US leaders in politics and business, who want to take over the world. They first send in there agent, Ocelot to infiltrate GRU and steal the Philosopher\&#39s Legacy. The Philosopher\&#39s Legacy is 100 Billion dollars that originally belonged to the Philosophers. But during the world war Volgin’s father stole the Legacy and set up a money laundering business. After the death of his father, Volgin inherited this 100 Billion, which he used to set up his base and start the whole revolt so he can get the ultimate power in USSR.

<>But due to uncontrollable circumstances, Ocelot can not successfully get the money from Volgin. So the Patriots create a plan to send in a spy over to his side and aid the spy in proving her loyalty to Volgin so she can get closer to the money. The Boss\&#39s true mission is to infiltrate Volgin\&#39s GRU and steal back the Philosopher\&#39s Legacy. Snake\&#39s role is to infiltrate Russia and “create a path” for The Boss to get inside GRU and gain Volgin’s trust. So the whole point of snake’s mission is to manipulate him to be at right place at right time so Boss can prove her loyalty to Volgin by severely hurting Snake. Unfortunately everything goes wrong when Volgin fires a Davy Crocket nuclear rocket at Sokolov\&#39s old research facility, causing a multi-national incident. It was something Patriots did not plan on.
To make things worst Volgin balms The Boss for firing the rocket at the Russians. The US is forced to agree with the Soviets and promise to fix this problem so that The Boss\&#39s true mission and Snake\&#39s next mission will remain covert. The patriots use the excuse of killing Boss to send in snake again into the enemy’s territory so they can manipulate him to be in places where Boss can prove her loyalty too. Like The Boss says when Snake returns to Russia, she never really defected. She was loyal to her purpose, to the "end". This was here orders and she would follow them even it means hurting snake.

But because of the nuclear explosion the world almost goes to another world war. Khruschev calls Johnson and insinuates that The Boss and Volgin should be killed. The US if forced to go along with what is suggested just to avert a war, with the Russians. The Boss’s next mission becomes to die at Snake\&#39s hands, relieving her country of blame for her supposed actions in detonating a nuclear bomb. It means that even if the US government wanted her dead for a crime she didn\&#39t commit, she would let the US (that is snake) kill her out of loyalty for here leaders. All the time Snake is told propaganda of what Boss is causing and how dangerous she is, when all she is doing is following the Patriots orders. The Patriots needed this 100 billion dollars as the startup money to create this organization that will restore the balance in the world and unite it back.

Snake does not learn about any of this until after he kills The Boss. After Boss’s death Snake and EVA go back to a cabin in the jungle for some “action”, only EVA has worn some knockout lipstick and she knocks Snake out with it. She records a tape explaining the true mission of the Boss all the manipulation that went on and leaves it for Snake. After snake gets back from his slumber, he plays it. EVA explains that she was a spy for China, attempting to steal the Philosopher\&#39s Legacy. she goes on to explain The Boss\&#39s true mission and the unplanned incidents that happened. While EVA is explaining this long story, Snake can be seen entering Johnson\&#39s office, getting medals and congratulations. When the President wants to shake his hand, snake is reluctant. Johnson grants Snake the title of Big Boss, because he is above even The Boss. When other people want to shake his hand, Snake stares at them like they\&#39re worthless and walks out. Major Zero, Para-medic and Sigint are there too, and he doesn\&#39t say so much as a word to them. Then he goes to Arlington and stands in front of a grave dedicated to an anonymous American patriot. He salutes to the grave just as EVA is finishing her story. This shows why Big Boss created Outer Heaven and Zanzibar land to create problems for the patriots.

After the end of the game, we learn that Ocelot is still alive and has bought back the 100 Billion dollars to the Patriots. Metal Gear Solid 3 does not exactly answer all the questions people had after MGS2. All MGS3 does is provide the backstory on the patriots and hints who the people on the disc Hal had at end of the game were (names of the dead Philosophers). But the game ties up the all 3 themes of Metal Gear series to show what exactly creates and shapes a human into being unique.
