) Fox's dying speech was different, for a start.
ORIGINAL GAME:
\"We're not tools of the government, or anyone else. Fighting was the only thing I was good at, but at least I always fought for what I believed in.\"
ITDOSM VERSION:
\"We're not tools for politicians or generals. All I ever did with my life was fight, but at least it was my own choice.\"
MY COMMENTS:
Eh. Pretty trivial changes. Let's do a biggie.
2) Liquid crawls in his skin and unleashes a load of bogus genetic theories. Snake doesn't buy it. At least I hope he doesn't.
ORIGINAL GAME:
\"Yes, twins, but we're not ordinary twins... we're twins linked by cursed genes. Les enfants terribles. You're fine. You got all the old man's dominant genes. I got all the flawed, recessive genes. Everything was done so that you would be the greatest of his children. The only reason I exist is so they could create you.\"
\"I was the favorite, huh.\"
\"That's right! I'm just the leftovers of what they used to make you. Can you understand what it's like to know that you're garbage since the day you were born!?\"
ITDOSM VERSION:
\"Twins, yes. But not in the ordinary sense. We're the flip sides of a counterfeit genetic coin. 'Enfants terrible'. You lucked out. They handpicked all of our father's superior traits for you. Everything that was undesirable, I got. Or should I say that I was everything undesirable left over from the creation process that was designed to produce you. The only reason I came into being was so that you could be born.\"
\"How could I be the superior -- specimen?\"
\"Oh, but you are. And I'm the dregs. You couldn't begin to understand what it was like starting out life as genetic garbage!\"
MY COMMENTS:
Snake's character remains very consistent in both translations. This is only the real spot in the versions where the feel of his line is different (well, not - but the other one's a bit minor, I can't be bothered to mention it here). Personally, I like the ITDOSM version of this speech better. While Snake is very snarky, his 'I was the favourite' line always struck me as a little unnatural. I think his ITDOSM line is better - it's still snarky, and yet it feels like he can't quite accept what Liquid's saying.
Now onto Liquid, who made the big change - he doesn't mention dominant or recessive genes, phenotypes, anything. All my Liquid fans will know how utterly painful this is. Everyone who's ever spent ten minutes reading a biology textbook will know Liquid was talking absolute pseudo-scientific rubbish. But here, with the vaguery, it actually sounds vaguely possible.
3) Liquid continues to crawl in his skin. Snake's given up sustaining a straight face.
ORIGINAL GAME:
\"Have you ever heard of the Asymmetry Theory? Nature tends to favor asymmetry. Those species which have gone extinct all show signs of symmetry. The Genome Soldiers suffer from the same problem... signs of symmetry. So do I, as do you. That's right. We are all on the verge of death at the genetic level. We don't know when or what type of disease will occur. That's why we need the old man's genetic information.\"
ITDOSM VERSION:
\"You ever heard of the law of biological asymmetry? There's a natural tendency towards left-right asymmetry. On the other hand, species that ran out of genetic diversity and are on path to extinction start showing complete symmetry. That's what's happening to the genome soldiers. And to us. Every one of us is dying on a genetic level. The question is when the decline will start. That's why I need our father's body, to get some answers.\"
MY COMMENTS:
Again, Liquid isn't so much of a complete biological retard in the ITDOSM version. While he does mention the Asymmetry Theory both times, it's made fairly clear in ITDOSM that he doesn't actually mean that the Enfants are all going to die because they're symmetrical - he seems to be using the theory as an allegory to show how, since there's no genetic variance between him and his 'family', they're all doomed. Bravo, Liquid, for actually listening in your science lessons in ITDOSM. I most heartily approve.
I should also point out that ITDOSM is a lot more vague about whether Snake and Meryl are actually in love. Liquid doesn't even say 'falling in love with a man who doesn't even have a name' - he says 'falling for', which keeps it pretty ambiguous.
But enough of that. Time for a spot of Naomi and Fox's backstories which was utterly censored out in the original. I mean it. Censored. Had to be. There is no way the translators could have completely missed this point unless they censored it out to keep the rating low.
4) Naomi gives both Raiden and Otacon a run for their money, at least in ITDOSM.
ORIGINAL GAME:
\"I was found in Rhodesia sometime in the 80's... a dirty little orphan...
\"I was alone for so long... until I met my big brother and him. Yes.... Frank Jaeger. He was a young soldier, when he picked me up near the Zambezi River. I was half-dead from starvation and he shared his rations with me.
\"Yes. Frank Jaeger, the man who you destroyed, was my brother and my only family. We survived that hell together, Frank and I. He protected me. He's my one connection... the only connection that I have to my past...I was in Mozambique when \"he\" came. He brought us to this land of freedom, this America. But then he and my brother went back to Africa to continue the war. And that's when it happened... You killed my benefactor and sent my brother home a cripple. I vowed revenge and joined FOX-HOUND. I knew it was my best chance to meet you and I prayed for the day that I could...\"
ITDOSM VERSION:
\"I was picked up in Northern Rhodesia, in the 80's. I was an orphan...
\"I was always searching for myself, alone. Until I met my brother and Him. [My brother], Frank Yaeger. He was a child soldier too. He found me almost dead of starvation on the bank of the Zambezi and fed me from his own small ration of food.
\"Yes, the man you destroyed is my brother. Frank Yeager, my only family. We managed to survive hell together, all because he protected me. He was everything to me. He was the only witness to my existence, and the only one who made me feel like a real human being. We met -- Him in Mozambique. Yes. He led us here, finally made us free. But Frank went with Big Boss, back to the wars. And when he came home to me, he was -- I promised myself that I would get you. You broke my brother, you as good as killed him. That's why I joined FOXHOUND. Because I knew that I would run into you sooner or later...\"
MY COMMENTS:
Well, I know they spelt Gray Fox's name wrong. But both Fox and Naomi were, apparently, child soldiers. Was that ever implied in the game, ever? They might have retconned it in for the sake of getting a child soldier theme going for when Raiden mentions his backstory, but I don't really think so. It's not just me misinterpreting it, either - in the actual 'book', Nastasha gives a long monologue about the amorality of the fact child soldiers exist. You already know my theory about why the translators didn't mention it.
5) Random jump ahead to act as a corollary - Snake and Fox make the promise which Snake breaks pretty much instantly with a white lie the size of an elephant.
ORIGINAL GAME:
\"Because I'm the one who killed her parents. I was young then and couldn't bring myself to kill her too. I felt so bad that I decided to take her with me. I raised her like she was my own blood to soothe my guilty conscience. Even now she thinks of me as her brother...
\"From the outside, we might have seemed like a happy brother and sister. But every time I looked at her, I saw her parents' eyes staring back at me... Tell her for me. Tell her that I was the one who did it.\"
ITDOSM:
\"I'm the one that killed her parents. I was just a child myself, and I couldn't stand to kill her too. I took her with me because it was the only way I could think of to assuage the guilt. I raised her to satisfy my half-baked conscience, but she gave me the love and respect I didn't deserve - called me her brother.
\"We may have looked like a happy little family, but I was terrified every time she looked me in the eye - that she would see the truth. Tell her for me will you? Tell her that I'm the one who took her family from her, not you.\"
MY COMMENTS:
Again, Fox says that he was a child. Again, Nastasha rambles on about the amorality of creating child soldiers. I think it's pretty canon, now.
Child soldiering aside, I think I prefer the original game version. For some reason, Fox seeing 'her parents' eyes' is a lot more powerful. And god, I teared up just cutting and pasting that in. FOOOOOOOOOooOOOOX nooooOOoOooO
Alright, now for general plot points.
O About Dr. Clark, who you may remember was the scientist who was experimenting on Fox before Naomi took over. Naomi tells us 'he was killed in an explosion in his lab two years ago'. In ITDOSM, she claims that it killed Fox as well. Ames then says something about how they found a severely mangled Clark and pieces of Fox's exoskeleton in there, and assumed Fox was dead. (Of course, later on, Naomi reveals that Fox killed Clark and she covered up the whole affair.)
O Naomi had an affair with Ames. Ames seemed to genuinely care for her, but he was bitter ('she was using me'). It's implied she'd slept her way up the chain of command - but not that she was talentless ('FOXDIE research had hit a brick wall until she came along...')
O I am completely ashamed to say I went all mushy when Ames kissed Nastasha at the end. Completely ashamed.
O I also liked how utterly incapable of dealing with Snake Nastasha was in the cells.
O And I laughed out loud when Ames nearly broke the fourth wall to mention the 'lol multiple endings' thing. '\"You have several choices.\" Richard explained with something resembling pity. \"It's up to you which ending this particular story has. I myself would suggest a quiet retirement from public life.\"
O The Colonel heard Miller's 'private' transmissions. He feigned ignorance.
O Liquid knows about The Patriots. I know this is a given, but it's nice to have evidence for it. When Snake was lying conscious on top of the Gear, he spoke through him as if he was a telephone reciever, and started badmouthing The Patriots through Snake's Codec.
O 'Naomi Hunter was formally taken into custody after the incident's conclusion. Three weeks later, as she was undergoing debriefing in a certain facility, she escaped. She has not been heard of since. Officials were close-mouthed about the circumstances of the escape, but inquiries into other quarters elicited the fact that someone had broken Naomi out of the base. I knew of only one person who could have breached the base's tight security and successfully led someone to freedom.'
May the people who said that Snake never forgave Naomi die a fiery death. |
