Of course, this kind of humour doesn’t really work if it’s just shoved in front of you without context but Rare has managed to make everything feel integrated by using a wealth of cultural references, including movies. You’ll have to wait until later in the game but things really hot up when Conker finds himself in a landing craft – Saving Private Ryan style. After the doors drop his fellow squirrels are immediately (and actually quite shockingly) torn up by a hail of gun fire, and the next few minutes of cut scene mimic the film to a tee – even down to one of the soldiers walking along and picking his arm up of the floor! The thing that strikes you about this (and the later Matrix spoof) is the way that the atmosphere of the movie has been captured. Everything down to the sound and camera work from the film is almost perfect, and even though it’s done in a comedic fashion, it’s actually quite moving – believe it or not! After the cut scene finishes, you’re thrown into a battle to take the beach–head, which involves you running for cover as machine gun fire tracks you. It’s great fun, superbly realised and an example of the variety in gameplay that CBFD offers.
