MGS4 takes place, as we know, in various locales. Something we didn't expect, however, was the appearance of VR locations in-game. It appears that our hero will have to don VR goggles and enter into a computer created Virtual Enivornment to deal with the situation.
In this \"futuristic battlefield\", we have more than simply physical means of war. Mental and cyber-war, in which Snake will have to infiltrate and recover information from numerous VR terminals. Confusing? We thought so too. This does come as a surprise. Hideo Kojima in a recent interview told us, \"War is not only an issue of physical unrest, but of mental unrest, and in the future, of mechanical unrest.\" He then went on to tell us, \"We explain how the theme of SENSE works in this manner. By donning the VR goggles and entering the Virtual Environment, we will be entering a world where our SENSEs are confused. Things might terrify us, and while they have no physical harm, the mental harm goes far beyond what the mere outter body can comprehend. And if Snake fails his mission, not only does he not retreive the information he desired, but he cieses to return his own.\"
When asked to elaborate, Mr. Kojima said this: \"Think of it as a modern day virus. It's placed in a computer, and runs a program opposite of what is demanded from the user. In such a manner, the VR environment simulator will run programs as a safe guard to keep Snake out.\" When asked if this environment would have effects on the real word, Kojima did not answer.
So what does this mean? Mechanical Warfare? Cyber Warfare? \"The net is wide and fast, covering the whole world, but holding it close.\" In said manner, it could very well be how Snake will be in \"numerous locations.\" Mr. Kojima would not answer all questions we asked such as, \"Will everything in-game be a Virtual Environment being simulated?\" He simply said \"no comment.\" How SENSE will work out into this new discover, we are unsure. Could Snake really not be in numerous places physical, but mentally? Could Snake's shooting himself be a termination of a program, not truly actual? We'll have to wait until this game's release to find out.

We had a few minutes to sit down and talk with Mr. Kojima concerning elements of gameplay, characters, and weapons. When he asked him about different weapons, he gave us somewhat vague responses. Considering the doozy of a twist he presented in the interview about the story, the weapons get even stranger as Mr. Kojima elaborates on his previous said statements.
\"The weapons\", said Mr. Kojima, \"are unique in this title. I mentioned how a lot of the game play will be experienced through a VR interface Snake enters into. In like, Snake will not always be using standard weapons in this game. He may use a handgun in real life, but when he enters the VR, he will have to adjust his weapons accordingly.\" When we asked about what this meant, here is what we heard. \"Snake will have to change the weapons he uses. Instead of common handguns, he'll have to use weapons which can eradicate a virus, while being cautious not to destroy the critical components which create the virtual environment.\" \"Critical components?\" He did not reply.
\"What about the weapons in VR?\" \"Obviously they will not be common handguns which fire normal rounds.\" said Kojima. He laughed. \"Think of more futuristic weapons.\" Futuristic? Hopefully not a sci-fi weapon? The answer threw us off. \" lasma rifle.\" he said. Plasma rifle. Metal Gear Solid 3 had The Pain who shot bees out of his mouth, so Plasma Rifles are not too far off the charts.
Changing the subject, we then talked about characters. \"Who are some of the characters we will see returning?\" He didn't feel like answering much. He sat quietly as he pondered the thoughts in his mind. \"Will Grey Fox be in this title?\" Kojima didn't answer. \"Is Eva back?\" No answer. \"Is Solidus alive?\" Kojima smiled. \"Is Big Boss still alive?\" \"If I were to tell you the answers to all of these questions, there would be no surprise.\"
Taking this as a warning, we then shifted the focus of our questions. \"Tell us about the new characters.\" Kojima politely nodded. \"One of the new characters is a war vet, someone Snake encounters.\" (See picture featured in article of the guy [me: I think it's to the left].) \"Do you remember how Snake liked Tom Boys?\" Oh no. \"Are you implying?\" Kojima gave us a devilish grin. \"Are you suggesting that he is a love interest for Snake?\" Our reponse was simple. \"I will not confirm it, but I will not deny it.\"
After we melted into a puddle and slid under our chairs, we managed to sneak back out from shelter and ask more simple questions. \"The grave. Can you tell us anything about it?\" \"I know there have been many questions about this, so I'll come right out and answer it. It's The Boss' grave.\" Shocking. Unfortunately, this great interview was cut short. How mindblowing, and how fast, we didn't get to talk with him long. He presented us with a quick dose of heavy intel, and had to make a split. Needless to say, these discoveries are surprising. At times we love where it's going, at other times, we question Kojima's ability to properly conclude a story. End of the line, get Metal Gear Solid 4. We were unable to ask all of the questions we know you wanted to hear because of time, such as game play, but we hope you're satisfied with this brief taste. |
