David Bryan Hayter (born February 6, 1969 in Santa Monica, California) is an American voice actor, actor, and screenwriter. He is most notable for providing the English voices of Solid Snake and later Naked Snake in the popular Metal Gear Solid series, and for co-writing the screenplays of the first two X-Men movies.
Biography
Though born in California, Hayter's parents were Canadian. He did some live acting in the early 1990s, but became interested in voice acting after appearing in an episode of the sitcom Major Dad as a character with a Russian accent. This led to his role as the voice of Captain America in the popular 1994 Spider-Man animated series. He also did some voices in various anime dubs, such as The Castle of Cagliostro. Contrary to popular belief, Hayter did not voice Wolverine/Logan in the X-Men animated series; that was the voice work of Cathal J. Dodd.
Hayter is known to be a huge fan of the Black Widow comic books. It is said that he named his daughter Natasha after Black Widow's main character with the same name.
In 1998, Hayter voiced Solid Snake in the highly successful PlayStation video game Metal Gear Solid. The deep, gruff voice of the game's protagonist is instantly recognizable and extremely popular with fans. He provided Snake's voice in later Metal Gear games such as Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (which was a remake of Metal Gear Solid), and provided the voice for a closely related character, Naked Snake, in the 2004 prequel, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Hayter has voiced characters in other video games, such as Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem.
For some voiceover projects, Hayter used the alias Sean Barker, the name of the character he played in the 1994 movie Guyver: Dark Hero. He also used this alias for his anime dub work in YuYu Hakusho when he voiced Kurama.
Hayter wrote the screenplay of the comic book movies X-Men and co-wrote its sequel, X2: X-Men United. He also co-wrote The Scorpion King and produced unused drafts for Hulk and The Chronicles of Riddick.
Along with his degree in English Language, Hayter has also completed a Further Maths degree, in between voice acting projects.
Currently Hayter is working on a number of projects. He is penning the screenplays for the upcoming comic book movies The Black Widow (which he's also slated to direct), Iron Man, and the currently on hiatus Watchmen. Although Black Widow has lost financial backing when Lionsgate dropped out, Hayter hopes to continue the project next year.

- According to an interview with Paul Eiding, Hayter gave up half of his own paycheck in order to bring back the cast of Metal Gear Solid for The Twin Snakes. This is the reason why the voice acting in The Twin Snakes was completely redone with the same actors.[citation needed]
- An interview with David Hayter by Game Informer in 2001 showed that Hayter wished for the then-unconfirmed Metal Gear Solid movie to be animated or made in CGI. He also wished to be the screenwriter under the possible supervision of Hideo Kojima.
- Hayter is the only Metal Gear Solid actor to date to actually play and beat the games.[citation needed]
- A popular myth is that Hayter is the voice of EA Sports (saying \"EA Sports: It's in the game!\") when in fact it is Andrew Anthony.
