Got it and beat it on release date. Got a PS3 for it alone (Although LBP and Killzone 2 will likely be added to the collection).
I'm still dwelling on the game itself. I do solidly dislike the plotline. It felt over the top and unnecessary, and overly connected. I am mainly referring to Big Boss at the very end, to Liquid Ocelot's reveal, and who the patriots really were. This all seemed rather inappropriate.
Snake's portrayal was both good and bad. Good in him being old, falling apart, and still trying to go forward. Bad in him being downright stupid occasionally. It felt like he asked a ton of questions, a lot unnecessary.
I felt Raiden was completely demolished. His character fell apart, was written too strongly and hamfistedly to be badass, and generally paled in comparison to his excellent role in MGS2.
The PMCs were on paper an excellent idea. In practice, generally a sideplot at best.
Drebin was a solid character, but relegating him to spit out the BatB corps background was..eh..
Gameplay wise, it excelled in the first and second act. I personally liked the third, but I can feel for people who disliked it. The fourth act was incredible the first time, and is still fairly solid. The fifth act was..confusing. I felt like it was missing a huge chunk.
Yet, it was enjoyable as a whole. A great game.. but not a great MGS game. It almost felt like it needed more time.
And yet, despite all of these opinions, I'm still not sure where to place it. It is almost as though MGS2 was wrote into a corner, one Hideo couldn't pull it back (or didn't have the passion to) from. I wasn't expecting aliens or anything incredibly supernatural.. but I was expecting something.. I don't know. Better than 'The cast of MGS3 and a buncha AIs are the Patriots!' and the extreme reliance on nanomachines.
Any thoughts?
