<><FONT size=2>The airplane that Snake drops off, in his small capsule-airplane is not an SR-71, but a modified version called the M-12. What actually happened is that Lockheed began development of project Tagboard to create a high-speed reconnaissance drone called the D-21 after Gary Powers got shot down in 1960. So in 1962 Lockheed Skunk Works started developing the D-21 (What Snakes in) and Kelly Johnson who lead the team at the time was trying to make best use of their other black-program, the A-12/SR-71, and decided to use it to carry the D-21 to range and then launch it off the back. The rest of the story and what happened you can find here:

it does seem Kojima got a little creative with the design (the original vehicle was unmanned) but it\\&#39s cool that he\\&#39s using real machines. </FONT><IMG src=\"http://www.globalsecurity.org/intell/systems/images/d21lnch.jpg\" border=0></P>

Smith & Wesson Model 39, First Generation -- \"Mark 22\"
(Usable - CQC Capable - Non-Lethal)

<IMG src=\"http://www.fox302.com/userdata/Solid_Snake/files/Guns/sw59.jpg\" border=0>

Origin: U.S.A
Caliber: 9 x 19mm Parabellum (Tranquilizer Shots in MGS 3)
Magazine Capacity: 8 Rounds (Single Stack Magazine)
Operation: Blowback
Barrel: 6 Grooves, RH
Muzzle Velocity: 274 mps (900 FPS) - using Mark 144 Model 0 9mm rounds
Effective Range: 30m (98ft)
Dimensions: 192mm (Lenght); 323mm (Lenght with Silencer); 102mm (Barrel)
Weight: 751g (Empty); 960g (Loaded)

The Smith & Wesson Model 39 was the first U.S. made Double-Action production pistol, being developped from 1949, production started in 1954, and being available from 1955 onward, and production of the First Generation Model 39 ceased in 1966.

The weapon was designed by one of the company\\&#39s engineers, Joseph Normal... the Double-Action of this weapon is heavily based on the German Walther P-38\\&#39s.

This weapon was presented for the 1953 U.S. Army pistol trials, that were dismissed in 1954 by the U.S. Army itself upon seeing no weapon surpassed the Colt 1911A1, the Model 39 was introduced to the civilian market in 1955.

However, many S&W M39\\&#39s were used in Vietnam since 1967 with the U.S\\&#39elite, under the form of the S&W Mk 22, which is basicly a M39 with a Threaded Barrel (A barrel that supports attachments) and a Silencer. Other differences were the addition of Adjustable Sights and a Slide Lock.

For the silencer to be effective, Sub-sonic MK 144 Model 0 9mm Rounds had to be used, these are lighter rounds that while less powerful (due to the lighter projectile), remain the overall effective range of the 9mm cartridge.

The silencer was so effective the gun won the nickname \"Hush Puppy\", the nickname was earned by it\\&#39s excelence at elimination guard dogs (Thus, \"Hush Puppy\") and sentinels silently.

In \"Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater\", this weapon appears under the form of a tranquilizer converted-handgun. The slide doesn\\&#39t move back, because the Tranquilizer rounds do not have enough power to allow Blowback to function properly, so racking the slide manually is necessary after each shot.

MGS 3 Notes: Pretty much the same as the Beretta M9 in MGS 2.
Except Snake uses his mouth to rack the slide when holding a hostage.
Accuracy is good for close range, but obviously range lacks in pistols, so I reckon it\\&#39s effective range in MGS 3 is the 30m that the real one uses. I can\\&#39t really hit much above that number.
- Optional silencer.

Colt Model 1911A1
(Usable - CQC Capable)

<IMG src=\"http://www.fox302.com/userdata/Solid_Snake/files/Guns/1911a1.jpg\" border=0>

Origin: U.S.A
Caliber: .45in ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol)
Magazine Capacity: 7 Rounds (Single Stack Magazine)
Operation: Short Recoil
Barrel: 6 grooves, RH
Muzzle Velocity: 253mps (830 FPS)
Effective range: 35m (114ft)
Dimentions: 216mm (Lenght); 127mm (Barrel)
Weight: 1.13kg (Empty, this is one heavy sucker)

The Colt 1911 has it\\&#39s roots in early 1900\\&#39s, when John Browning began developping Semi-Automatic Handguns for Colt, after a failed experiment.

In 1906/1907, the U.S. Army announced it wanted to replace it\\&#39s revolvers with
Semi-Automatic pistols, as a result of the bad experiences that U.S. Soldiers went through in the Phillipines with Browning\\&#39s \"failed experiment\": A .38 revolver, that proved an inneficient man-stopper.

With this, the U.S. Army was forced to dig up the rejected Colt .45 Revolvers to be held as standard issue until the 1906/07 trials.
Browning developed a new handgun, which would become the Colt 1911, along with a new cartridge, the .45in ACP.

After extensive testing, it was accepted by the U.S. military as \"U.S. Pistol, Automatic, Caliber .45, Model 1911\" ... in short, the Colt M1911.
It was a superb handgun that proved itself in the World War I trenches, as a reliable, powerful, accurate weapon... however, it was modified in 1926 after the Army\\&#39s Ordenance Department request to do so... the modifications were the following:

- Front Sight Widened
- Hammer Spur made longer
- Curved spring housing
- Simplified grip panels checkering
- Index finger reliefs behind the trigger
- Grip-safety spur made longer
- Trigger made shorter

It was then re-adopted as the Colt M1911A1. It remained in service until mid-1980\\&#39s when it was replaced as the U.S. Army standard issue handgun by the Beretta 92SB, as the Beretta M9.

MGS 3 Notes: A good handgun, accurate, and powerful. A single or two shots in the chest and your target is definatly dead.
Shoot the arms and legs, and get ready to find yourself with an empty magazine, and an enemy pointing his AKM at you...
Undoubtably more accurate than the MK-22, but that might just be a sight thing. Effective range around 40m in MGS 3.
- Optional Silencer.

Makarov PM/PMM
(Ocelot/Soviets only, most likely)

<IMG src=\"http://www.fox302.com/userdata/Solid_Snake/files/Guns/makarov.jpg\" border=0>

Origin: USSR
Caliber: 9 x 18mm Soviet
Magazine Capacity: 8 Rounds (Single Stack Magazine)
Operation: Blowback
Barrel: 4 grooves, RH
Muzzle Velocity: 315mps (1033 FPS)
Effective range: 40m (131ft)
Dimentions: 160mm (Lenght); 91mm (Barrel)
Weight: 663g (Empty)

This is Ocelot\\&#39s weapon, before he gets his revolvers from \"Snake\". It\\&#39s a simple blow-back, small sized, semi-automatic, double-action weapon, that is heavily based on the Walther PP (Police Pistol).

It\\&#39s development began shortly after World War II, and it became the standard Soviet side-arm from the late 1950\\&#39s onward.

The special PM 9 x 18mm Soviet cartridge had a different width than the Western 9 x 18mm Ultra and Police cartridges, making it incompatible with western ammunition. The Makarov, was, however, available also in western calibers such as the .380 ACP (9 x 19mm Short) for exportation.

While it\\&#39s small size doesn\\&#39t allow for accurate shots over 20m, and despite it\\&#39s cartridge not being a powerful one, the Makarov was reliable and was still one of the best-selling compact-sized personal defense weapons ever.

It was also sold to other Eastern block countries such as East Germany (as the \"istole M\") and China (as the \"Type 59\"), as well as showing up in North-Vietnamese troops\\&#39 hands during Vietnam.

Colt Single Action Army AKA Peacemaker
(Usable - CQC Capable)

<IMG src=\"http://www.fox302.com/userdata/Solid_Snake/files/Guns/colt_saa1.jpg\" border=0>

Origin: U.S.A
Caliber: .45 Colt Revolver Cartridge
Drum Capacity: 6 Rounds
Operation: Revolver
Muzzle Velocity: ~ 265mps (~ 870 FPS)
Effective range: ~ 30m (~ 98ft)
Dimentions: 318mm (Lenght);191mm (Barrel)
Weight: 1048g (Unloaded)

The Colt Single Action Army (SAA), AKA the Colt Peacemaker, is a legend amongst revolvers afficionados.

Besides being Ocelot\\&#39s choice of revolvers, Snake also uses one of these in MGS 3, as seen by the scene in TGS where he meets \"The Sorrow\".
Snake gives these to Ocelot at some point in MGS 3, and he also uses one of them.

It roots back to 1873, and is currently still in manufacture, despite some interruptions of it\\&#39s production during the 20th Century.

In 1873, US Army adopted the SAA to troops in two models: The Army / Cavalry Model, and the Artillery Model -- the only difference between these are the barrel lenghts, and the specifications here posted are the Army / Cavalry ones.

While it is a reliable, accurate and powerful weapon, it has no means of safety, so a hard knock can set it off, being this one of it\\&#39s few cons.
Ocelot also uses these in MGS 1 and 2, I also believe he uses the Army model...

On a side note, this weapon can be, supposadly, accessed in the E3 Demo by using some codes with CodeBreaker...

Shotguns

Ithaca Model 37 \\&#39Stakeout\\&#39

<IMG src=\"http://www.fox302.com/userdata/Solid_Snake/files/Guns/ithaca37st.jpg\" border=0>

Origin: U.S.A
Caliber: 12 Gauge
Magazine Capacity: 4 Round Tubular Magazine
Operation: Pump-Action
Muzzle Velocity: Depends on the round-type
Effective range: 100m (328ft)
Dimentions: 1003mm (Lenght); 470mm (Barrel)
Weight: 3.06 Kg (Unloaded)

The Ithaca Model 37 (Or M37) is a shotgun, and appears in the Metal Gear Solid 3 Demo.
The \"Stakeout\" is the police, short-stock version of the M37.

The M37 was introduced in 1937 (is still manufactured today) and was based upon one of Browning\\&#39s shotgun designs (Circa 1915) and was improved by Harry Howland of the Ithaca Gun Corporation in 1931.
While Browning had sold his design to Remington, the design was (obviously) bought by Ithaca.

It is a conventional Pump-Action, Lightweight, shotgun, with ambidextrous facilities (Thanks to Browning\\&#39s patent bottom ejection feature -- used to load the magazine and eject the spent round shells), it is also available in various calibers besides 12 gauge, as well as more compact versions.

Sadly, while it is a very good shotgun, it lacks capacity, only being capable of holding 4 rounds in it\\&#39s tubular magazine.

MGS 3 Demo Notes: Even if it has only a four round capacity, and a slow Rate of Fire -- note, that I to shoot the M37 quickly, equip/unequip it, as if it was pumped between shots -- this is a devastating weapon, taking out several enemies at once with a single shot.
Effective range up to 25m at best in the demo.

Assault Rifles

Colt XM16E1

<IMG src=\"http://www.fox302.com/userdata/Solid_Snake/files/Guns/m16a1.jpg\" border=0>

The rifle shown is actually an M16A1, earlier XM16E1 pictures are quite rare. The only difference is that the bolt-assist was square rather than round on earlier models.

Origin: U.S.A
Caliber: 5.56 x 45mm M193/NATO
Magazine Capacity: 20 Rounds
Operation: Gas
Rate of Fire: 650/750 RPM
Barrel: 6 grooves, RH
Muzzle Velocity: 1000 mps (3280 FPS)
Effective range: 500m and over (1640ft)
Dimentions: 990mm (Lenght);508mm (Barrel)
Weight: 2.86 Kg (Unloaded)

The \"XM16E1\", is no more than the first updated variant of the AR-15, AKA the M16 \"Vietnam\".
The differences between these weapons are mentioned below in the timeline.

The AR-15 concept emerged from one of Eugene Stoner\\&#39s past designs, the AR-10. This particlar weapon was chambered for the 7.62 x 51mm NATO round, so it wasn\\&#39t exactly popular within the U.S. where the 7.62mm round was considered \"obsolete\", so the AR-15 emerged as a cut-down AR-15 chambered for the new, lighter and more managable 5.56 x 45mm round.

It\\&#39s history is too long to describe, so I will just talk about it\\&#39s landmarks up until the end of the 1960s.

- 1948: The U.S. Army\\&#39s Operation Research Office (ORO) was created during September of this same year, at the John Hopkins University. It\\&#39s goal was to raise effectiveness of military operations.
Their first assignment was to research a better body armor for U.S. Soldiers -- for this they interrogated troops, out of which, they took these conclusions:
- 95% of the shots fired were intended for targets within 300 meters.
- Most confirmed kills were done under 100 meters.
- Probability on hitting a target with an aimed shot, was about the same as spraying bullets in the target\\&#39s direction.

Therefor, aside from their first assignment, ORO stated that the most effective round possible under these circumstances, would have to be a light, controllable round, capable for combat up to 300 meters.

- 1953: The SALVO project commenced, it was a project with aim to create the new desired rounds.

- 1957: The project came to a conclusion: what would be the .222in Remington round was born. With this, the U.S. Army stated a requirement to Armalite and Remington, requesting the creation of a .222in-based rifle.

- 1958: Working on the AR-15, Eugene Stoner concludes that he couldn\\&#39t create a rifle capable of meeting the requirement of a 300 meter range, unless the .222in cartridge was turned into something more powerful.
Out of his request, the .223in Remington was born -- more commonly known as the 5.56 x 45mm NATO round.

- 1960: Eugene Stoner leaves Armalite and joins Colt, taking his AR-15 design with him.
During the same year, Colt shows the AR-15 was shown to the U.S. Air Force Vice Chief of Staff, General LeMay, which was impressed by it and ordered 8000 rifles for the Air Force to replace the old M1 Carbines that were still in service.

- 1962: U.S. DoD Advanced Research Projects Agency (A.R.P.A) purchased around 1000 AR-15 rifles from Colt, and sent them to South Vietnam for field trials. The South Vietnamese described the \"Black Rifle\" -- also known as the \"Black Dragon\" -- as an excelent one.

- 1963: Colt recieves a contract for the manufacture of 85000 XM16E1 - The XM16E1 is actually an upgraded M16, that differs from the latter by having a different flash-hider -- the older one had the tendancy to get stuck in vegetation -- as well as a Forward Assist in order to manually charge the bolt and help fix jams in the gun.

- 1964: The US Airforce officially adopts the M16 still in the original AR-15 form only with different markings, having none of the upgrades the XM16E1 has.

In the same year, the U.S Army buys some more updated XM16E1s, becoming a limited standard for the Army, intended to replace the aging M14s in service.

- 1967: US Army adopts the XM16E1 rifle as a standard \"US Rifle, 5.56mm, M16A1\", on 28 February 1967.

However, the weapon, both in the form of the M16 \"Vietnam\" and the \"XM16E1\", were prone to jams.
This was due to two reasons:
- One of the problems found was the propellant used that caused too much fouling in the gun\\&#39s barrel.
This was a mistake caused by the U.S. Army itself that decided to use Ball-Type propellants that were used in the earlier 7.62 x 51mm round, rather than the IMR propellant rounds that were used during trials.

- The other problem was the fact that there was no training on how to properly clean the M16 until 1967, where a small instruction manual was issued to troops along with the new M16A1s on how to maintain their rifles.

MGS 3 Notes: A fast-firing weapon with a managable recoil while standing and shooting full automatic, and the 20 round magazine seems to be enough to take out many enemies, despite emptying very quickly.
Accurate, slightly less powerful than the AKM. Effective range up to 200m or so.
- Crouch/Prone to control recoil better and thus being more accurate.
- Shoulder View by holding <IMG src=\"http://www.gamersbg.com/mgs/forum/images/smiles/icon_l1[1].gif\" border=0> in FPV. (Iron Sight View)
- Switch firing modes (Semi/3 round burst/Full-Auto) in the Weapon Selection screen by pressing Triangle.
- Optional Silencer.

CAR-15 / Colt Commando (Model 733)

<IMG src=\"http://www.fox302.com/userdata/Solid_Snake/files/Guns/car15.jpg\" border=0>

Origin: U.S.A
Caliber: 5.56 x 45mm M193/NATO
Magazine Capacity: 20/30/100 Round Magazines
Operation: Gas
Rate of Fire: 650/750 RPM
Barrel: 6 grooves, RH
Muzzle Velocity: 1000 mps (3280 FPS)
Effective range: 500m and over (1640ft)
Dimentions: 680/762mm (Min./Max. Lenght w/ Collap. Stock); 292mm (Barrel)
Weight: 2.44 Kg (Unloaded)

This weapon is used by \"The Boss\" along with a 100 round Beta-C magazine. Her version has no stock and has a heavy barrel.

The CAR-15 was simply a shortened M16A1, developed in 1965 for use with U.S. special forces in Vietnam, who needed the M16\\&#39s firepower in a lighter and smaller package.
To do this, about 28cm (~ 10 inches) were cut from the M16A1\\&#39s barrel as well as a shorter stock being used in this new design.

However, despite Colt\\&#39s attempt at creating a direct, scaled copy of the M16, a few problems aroused:

- First off, the shorter barrel made the gun shot even louder, deafning the user, also making the muzzle flash huge and blinding, as well as giving away the firer\\&#39s position.

- Secondly, a few Rate of Fire consistency problems were indicated: The carbine was uncapable of maintaining it\\&#39s full-auto function at a constant, stable ROF, \"juggling\" the ROF instead. This was due the the awkard barrel lenght.

To solve these problems, Colt came up with the Colt Model 609 Commando, that had the new tubular buttstocks, a new Gas Port design, as well as a longer flash-suppressor. This version would be adopted as the XM-177E1 by the U.S. Army.
Later on, in 1967, Colt switched the 10 inch barrel for a 11.5 inch barrel for even better performance. This version was the XM177E2.

Eventually, in the early 1990\\&#39s, the XM177E2 was updated with a new, more compact flash-hider, being renamed to the Colt Commando Model 733. This would be the main M16 Carbine in service with the U.S. Army until 1994, when the famous M4 appeared.

Avtomat Kalashnikova 47/Avtomat Kalashnikova Modernizirovannyj

<IMG src=\"http://www.fox302.com/userdata/Solid_Snake/files/Guns/akm.jpg\" border=0>

This is the AKM -- Post 1959 AK-47. Note the much smaller recess on the magazine housing.

Origin: USSR
Caliber: 7.62 x 39mm Russian
Magazine Capacity: 30/40 Rounds
Operation: Gas
Rate of Fire: 600 RPM
Barrel: 4 Grooves, RH
Muzzle Velocity: 600 mps (2350 FPS)
Effective Range: 400m (1320ft)
Dimensions: 870mm (Lenght); 415mm (Barrel)
Weight: AK-47 - 4.3Kg (Empty); AKM - 3.14Kg (Empty)

The AK-47... a legendary firearm.

It\\&#39s history started when in 1944, after Sergeant Mikhail Kalashnikov was wounded in battle, and started doing small-arm sketches while hospitalized.

During the same year, he was sent to Izhevsk Machinebuilding Plant, where he developped a gas-operated carbine in the same year... during 1945 and 1946 he developed an assault rifle, which would be submitted to the Soviet Army trials in 1946. The gun wasn\\&#39t accepted.

During 1947, the second trials began, and it was adopted in 1949 as the \"7.62mm Automat Kalashnikova, Obraztsa 1947 Goda\" ... needless to say, this weapon would end up as the legendary and most known firearm in history -- The AK-47.

In 1951, along with some few modifications (While the AK-47 name was retained) a new model came out: The AKS-47, a shorter folding-buttstock version of the AK-47.

In 1959, the AK was modified again, now with a Machined Reciever that causes alot less problems than the original AK-47 Milled reciever... this gun was trialed, and was adopted as the \"Avtomat Kalashnikova Modernizirovannyj\", meaning a \"Modernized\" version of the AK-47. A removable flash-hider was also added so add-ons could be attached.
Other changes were as follow:

- A resdesigned buttstock and pistol grip
- Settings on the iron sight now ranged from 100m to 1000m, rather than the 800m available on the AK-47 (Even if combat range rarely exceeds 400m).

It is an effective single-shot weapon (Full Auto is uncontrolable), accurate on the first shot, as well as reliable on the harshest conditions. It will still fire even if the chamber is filled with dust, also it\\&#39s a robust weapon, as well as relatively cheap to manufacture.

The AK prevails in the AKM form, being the original AK-47 somewhat a collectors item... the AK can be distinguished from the AKM by the machined recess above the magazine housing on both 1951+ models and both the AKM (1959+).

The AK, is without a doubt, the most distributed firearm in the world: Many rifles were sent out to pro-communist countries and rebels, such as North Vietnam, Angola and Mozambique... after these wars, many AK\\&#39s were sold and are somewhat common in the middle east, being often effectively cheaper than food.

It is practicly no longer in service, since the most countries have now adopted lighter cartridges, such as the 5.45 x 39mm crtridge, the western world with the 5.56 x 45mm...
However, the AK will continue to show up in the battlefield, most likely in terrorist hands...

MGS 3 Notes: Accurate on the first shot, but the recoil is unmanagable, unless you\\&#39re prone. Still, it\\&#39s slightly more powerful than the M16, if used in bursts. Effective range of 200m or so.
Another thing, the AKM model used in MGS 3 is the 1951 AKM model. It has the large recess.

- Crouch/Prone to control recoil better and thus being more accurate.
- Shoulder View by holding <IMG src=\"http://www.gamersbg.com/mgs/forum/images/smiles/icon_l1[1].gif\" border=0> in FPV. (Iron Sight View)
- Switch firing modes (Semi/Full-Auto) in the Weapon Selection screen by pressing Triangle. I recommend Semi-automatic fire with Shoulder View.

Light Machine Guns (LMGs)

Stoner M63

<IMG src=\"http://www.fox302.com/userdata/Solid_Snake/files/Guns/63aMMG.jpg\" border=0>

Origin: U.S.A
Caliber: 5.56 x 45mm NATO/M193
Magazine Capacity: 150 Round Belt-Box Fed
Operation: Gas
Rate of Fire: 700/1000 RPM
Barrel: 6 grooves, RH
Muzzle Velocity: 1000 MPS (3300 FPS)
Effective range: 1000m (3300ft)
Dimentions: Variable ~ 660mm w/o stock
Weight: 4.9 Kg (Unloaded)

The Stoner M63\\&#39s history began with the development of the 7.62 x 51mm NATO Stoner 62, which, as it\\&#39s name emplies, was designed by the AR-15\\&#39s creator, Eugene Stoner.

Seeing it as the 7.62mm NATO round wasn\\&#39t very up-to-date within the U.S. , Stoner rechambered and redesigned the M62 to accomodate the 5.56mm M193 round.

The M63 was adopted as the \"XM22\" in the U.S. Military. The \"XM23\" was the cut-down Commando variant.

It was introduced in early 1963, with it\\&#39s debut within the U.S. Navy as the M63A1.

The Navy \"forwarded\" their new M63s to the Navy Seals, which found it to their likening, being it a more reliable, efficient, lighter and overall more controlable than the M60.

Weighing at 4.9 KG, this weapon is 6 KG lighter than the M60.
Also, the use of the brand new 5.56mm round allowed for the weapon to empty it\\&#39s 150 Belt-Box Magazine without having to change barrel once. This lighter and more managable round is also used within the XM16E1 (M16A1\\&#39s early prototype).

Despite the M63\\&#39s general success within the Seals, it still was prone to malfunctioning and jamming within the field. This would be most likely due to the round proppelant that was used in the 1960\\&#39s, which was the same as the 7.62mm round\\&#39s, that caused much more fouling within the firearm\\&#39s barrel.

However, the M63 was decided that it would stay only as it was -- it would not overcome the far-worse M60 as the U.S. Army\\&#39s light machine gun.
It was more expensive, harder and more complex to maintain (Thus, would mean alot more training on the user\\&#39s behalf -- not a good thing from the Army\\&#39s point of view).

It was never really trialed within the Navy, it was, however, trialed during the 1980\\&#39s agaisnt the FN MINIMI (M249 SAW) for the LMG place within the Army.

It was beaten by the M249 SAW, which was adapted as the Army\\&#39s \"Squad Automatic Weapon\" (SAW).
The Stoner, is still however, in use today amongst the Navy Seals, under the form of the \"Knight\\&#39s Stoner 5.56 LMG\".

This weapon is the proof that not all flawed firearms, are bad firearms. This was truly an exception.

Sniper Rifles

SVD Dragunov

<IMG src=\"http://www.fox302.com/userdata/Solid_Snake/files/Guns/Dragunov_SVD.jpg\" border=0>

Origin: USSR
Caliber: 7.62 x 54r (The \"r\" stand for \"Rimmed\") Soviet
Magazine Capacity: 10 Rounds
Operation: Gas
Barrel: 4 Grooves, RH
Muzzle Velocity: 828 mps (2720 FPS)
Effective Range: 600m (1980ft)
Dimensions: 1225mm (Lenght); 620mm (Barrel)
Weight: 4.35 Kg (empty)

The SVD Dragunov (Snaiperskaya Vintovka Dragunova - Dragunov Sniper Rifle) was created due to a request in 1958, it was introduced in 1963 and adopted by the Soviets in the same year, however, it wasn\\&#39t meant to be a standard Sniper Rifle: The Dragunov was meant to be some kind of support rifle, every infantry squad is equipped with one.

It\\&#39s an outstanding sniper rifle, and can accept regular 7.62 x 54R cartridges (It uses a special SVD grade steel-cored bullet), note that this cartridge has it\\&#39s origins in the 19th century, is still a rimmed cartridge, rather than a centerfire one (rimmed cartridges protrude their \"mouths\" rather than the intrudes we see in today\\&#39s rounds) and is quite effective despite it\\&#39s age!

The gun is reliable under the harshest conditions, light for it\\&#39s class (most snipers weigh over 7 KG) accurate, powerful. Should there be some problem with the PSO-1 4x Scope, the gun also has backup iron sights as well as, even if rather wierd for a sniper rifle... a bayonet lug, for the AK-47 Bayonet...

The latest versions have polymer (Kind of a fiberglass/plastic) stock, being it lighter. They also have a different Muzzle-Flash/Compensator - in this form, the SVD Dragunov is still in service with the Russian Army as well as Law Enforcement agencies...

MGS 3 Notes: An excelent, accurate Sniper Rifle, by all means.
Just be sure to when using <IMG src=\"http://www.gamersbg.com/mgs/forum/images/smiles/icon_l1[1].gif\" border=0> to aim, gently hold the Square button before shooting, so the gun is set to single action (cocked) and thus not affecting the accuracy. 4x/6x Scope is used, so an effective range of 500m at the least is in order.
You can kill two guards with the very same bullet.
Basicly, a \"One shot, (more than) one kill\" weapon.

Mosin-Nagant M1891-30 Sniper Rifle

<img src="http://www.fox302.com/userdata/Solid_Snake/files/Guns/mosin9130s.jpg">

Origin: USSR
Caliber: 7.62 x 54r (The "r" stand for "Rimmed") Soviet
Magazine Capacity: 5 Round Integrated Magazine
Operation: Bolt-Action
Muzzle Velocity: 805 mps (2650 FPS)
Effective Range: 1000m (3250ft)
Dimensions: 1304mm (Lenght); 802mm (Barrel)
Weight: 4.43 Kg (empty)

This is the weapon The End uses -- except his has some kind of short/folding Stock and a pistol grip. (Thanks to FAMAAS on the pistol grip, I didn\&#39t notice that.)

The Mosin-Nagant ("Vintovka Mosina" -- "Mosin Rifle") was born out of a mix between designs of the belgian Emil brothers and of Leon Nagant, as well as the tsarist russian officer, Sergei Mosin.

It\&#39s production began in 1891 -- after a particular trial, where both finalists were literally mixed: Nagant\&#39s rifle and Mosin\&#39s Rifle -- where both and it\&#39s issue as the "Trechlineynaja Vintovka Obraztsa 1891 Goda" to become the russians\&#39 standard infantry rifle started in the same year.
The first batches were produced in France by Chatelleraut Arms, since the Soviets did not have the necessary material to create such rifles... however, the russian production began between 1895/1986 at Izhevsk and Tula.

During World War I, Russia again had to request foreigners to manufacture the rifle for them, due to their desperate lack of rifles -- the U.S. based companies Remington and Westinghouse were given these responsibilities, and while they were at it, they improved the 1891\&#39s design.
With the instable state in Russia in 1917, these rifles ended up being used in the U.S. as training rifles.

The original Mosin-Nagant is a simple, reliable, charger loaded bolt-action rifle, but nothing out of this world, the 1891-30 are hand-picked Mosin-Nagants with better accuracy, a scope mounted on the left side of the rifle, and the bolt bent down to simplify cartridge extraction -- the standard rifle did have a huge problem though, whenever the spike bayonet was to be mounted/dismounted, the sights would be reset, affecting accuracy and needing recalibration.

Explosives

RPG-7V

<img src="http://www.fox302.com/userdata/Solid_Snake/files/Guns/rpg732.jpg">

Caliber: 40mm/85mm Grenades
Muzzle Velocity: 120 mps (~ 360 FPS)
Effective Range: 300m (~ 900ft)
Dimensions: 953mm (W/o Grenade); 1340mm (W/ Grenade)
Weight: 7.9kg (Launcher); 2.25kg (Grenade)
Armor Penetration: 330mm

RPG stands for "Rocket-Propelled Grenade", or "Raketniy Protivotankoviy Granatomet".

This particular weapon entered service in 1961, it\&#39s a recoiless, shoulder-fired, muzzle loaded grenade launcher.
Soldiers who carry this particular weapon tend to carry three extra rounds in a backpack.

Reloading the RPG-7 takes at least 14 seconds, during which the firer is very vunerable to enemy fire, if not properly protected. The weapon leaves a trace of smoke and emits a muzzle flash that can easily be spotted.
Even though the weapon can be fired and reloaded by a single person, it\&#39s a Russian army standard role to have a support rifleman for the grenadier that provides covering fire to the one firing the RPG-7. Also, like the SVD Dragunov, there is a single RPG-7 issued to each squad.

The Rocket-Propelled grenade ignites after 10m of flight, and even though accuracy isn\&#39t the best factor in this weapon, it can hit stationary targets up to 300m. The projectile cannot go over 920m of flight, after which it self-destructs.

The RPG-7V is no more than an upgraded RPG-7, capable of accepting Optics that range from simple zooming sights, to night and infrared sights.

It is not only an Anti-Tank weapon, but a universal weapon. It is capable of destroying bunkers and taking down helicopters, planes, as long as the firer is capable of hitting them, since the RPG-7V does not have any kind of heat-seeking grenades. It is even used in Anti-Personnel roles.

<>我来惛砖引玉一段吧*</P>
<>RPG-7V</P>
<><IMG src="http://www.fox302.com/userdata/Solid_Snake/files/Guns/rpg732.jpg" border=0></P>

该项目的细节和其他相关内容可以在这里访问到*<a href="http://www.globalsecurity.org/intell/systems/d-21.htm" target="_blank" >http://www.globalsecurity.org/intell/systems/d-21.htm</A></P>

<P>
